Capstone eLearning Project:
Bringing it All Together

Description

The possibilities for capstone projects are endless. We will help you choose a project that meets your needs and helps you solve a real problem or meet a real challenge. You will be assigned a personal learner coach who has the experience and expertise to help guide you through to the completion of this project. The learner coach will be, in essence, your personal consultant, providing advice, direction, feedback and resources to ensure the success of your final application project. Capstone projects should be sufficiently large that they challenge you and allow you to apply lessons learned from the program. However, they should not be so large that they are impossible to finish in a two- to four-month timeframe.

The final project is designed to encourage the learner to reflect on the three core courses and to apply the learning to a specific context. We will ask learners to apply learning to a workplace context, as we believe this will be most relevant to their career development. (We will, however, consider other contexts that serve the purpose of demonstrating applied competencies.)

The Capstone project is comparable to a major paper in a Masters Degree program, but more applied. We are looking for you to demonstrate a depth of conceptual understanding and an ability to apply concepts in a real life situation. There are two approaches that will be acceptable:

  1. A project that demonstrates a range of competencies (e.g. business evaluation, eLearning pedagogy)
  2. A project, which demonstrates a depth of competency on a particular aspect of eLearning management.

In the Capstone Project, you will be asked to apply what you have learned to a defined eLearning project that is relevant to your own situation. Some examples of projects include:

  1. A blended learning approach to delivering pension education that combines a business case analysis with elements of design
  2. Strategic choices in selecting a suite of eLearning tools
  3. Approaches to design and facilitation in sales training
  4. Using eLearning to support Six Sigma process improvement

Course Format

As a Capstone participant, you will be assigned a Learner Coach and placed into an online learning environment. After an initial reflection period (capsulated in a Reflective Report) the Learner Coach and you will agree on an appropriate project that combines a need for conceptual understanding with application to a specific circumstance.

As with any workplace project, the Learner Coach and the Capstone Participant will agree on a specific timetable and deliverables. For instance, there may be a need for an initial literature review followed by a brief paper that summarizes the literature and the implications for the project.
