The eLearn Campus Team

Rick Nigol
Co-Founder, Director of Education

Rick Nigol
Rick is one of Canada's top experts on eLearning practice. He has 20 years experience in the field of adult and continuing education (11 of these in eLearning), helping plan and deliver a wide-range of education and training programs to a diverse clientele.

As Director of eLearn Campus, Rick is responsible for ensuring that our programs are of the highest quality and that they meet the evolving needs and required competencies of managers of eLearning training and educational programs. He recruits and hires our course developers and online learner coaches, always on the look-out for dedicated professionals who have “been there, done that.”

Rick also works on the Solutions team to deliver organizational solutions that help to plan, implement, manage, and evaluate results-oriented eLearning programs for the corporate sector, associations, government departments, non-profit groups and academe.

Previously, Rick was the Manager of Distance Education and DE Learning Technologies at the University of Guelph. He was a key part of the management team that drove the University to be among the leaders in distance education in Canada. Guelph’s online courses and programs have been recognized with awards for excellence nationally, and internationally.

He was also a Program Manager and Marketing Manager for Lifelearn Inc., a multimedia educational and informatics company serving the veterinary profession. Rick understands the broad strategic issues, but also the practical issues as to how information and communication technology can be wedded with sound pedagogy to create innovative online learning environments that deliver results.

Rick is a former President of the Ontario Council for University Lifelong Learning.

Michael Grant
Co-Founder, Director of Research

Michael Grant

Michael Grant is responsible for two critical components of our approach: pre-design research (to determine user and stakeholder needs) and post-project evaluation.  Michael brings a variety of research and conceptualization skills to bear on specific solutions for eLearn Campus clients.  He has developed a value model of eLearning that goes well beyond traditional ROI measurements, which can be customized to many different organizational settings.  Michael applies the same value management techniques to eLearn Campus courses to ensure that they continue to offer value for money.

Michael has over 20 years experience in applied research (including business analysis, survey research, focus groups and modeling).  Michael has served as a research director at the Conference Board of Canada (Canada’s largest economic and business think tank).  He also ran his own research company for 10 years.

Jon-Anthony Lui
Director of Learning Solutions

Jon-Anthony Lui

Jon-Anthony Lui’s role is to ensure that eLearn Campus courses and custom solutions are tailored to specific client and learner needs.  Jon is an expert on marketing eLearning programs, which is often a key stumbling block to the adoption of eLearning and, ultimately, course completion rates.  “Marketing” is different from “selling” in that it seeks to understand user needs at a deeper level.  No amount of internal promotion or selling of eLearning will work if organizations haven’t grounded their eLearning in learner needs.

Jon-Anthony has found that many organizations place great importance on eLearning technology. But eLearning technology is just a tool and if learning and graphical design does not take into consideration user learning preferences and need for visual stimulation, eLearning fails to engage learners.  This situation is analogous to the development of television: in the first generation it was acquiring the television box, but the real growth of television came when innovative people created programs that addressed audiences needs for entertainment, education and the like.  That is why eLearn Campus recognizes that successful eLearning programs require a range of competencies including design, production, and evaluation.  But it is important that all these creative aspects are grounded in specific client needs which provides the framework for establishing value.

Jon formerly worked for a learning management system (LMS) provider that specialized on solutions for the franchising industry.

Catharine Johnston
Project Lead, Organizational Effectiveness Through eLearning

Catharine Johnston

More and more of our clients see eLearning as a strategic asset that contributes to organizational effectiveness and development. This accords with our own approach to customized eLearning; it is less about “courses” and more about a range of online learning supports (including courses, knowledge repositories, embedded system supports, learning communities) that contribute to the broader objective of organizational effectiveness through people. Catharine’s role is to help our clients make the critical link between organizational effectiveness and eLearning.

Catharine has considerable senior management experience in organizational effectiveness. She most recently was Executive Vice President, Business Effectiveness for Intrawest Corporation, the Canadian resort operator. She was also Executive Vice President at Noranda, the mining and metals company and also helped lead organizational effectiveness at CP Rail. She has authored several studies on best practices in making organizations more effective.

Linda Gibson
Senior Course Developer and Learner Coach

Linda Gibson
Linda Gibson has been studying about, designing, and developing innovative and award-winning distance education and eLearning courses since 1994. Like most “life-long learners,” Linda has taken a scenic tour approach to building her educational portfolio, from PhD courses in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum at the University of Toronto (OISE) to continuing ed courses and “freebies” online. It was while living in a remote northern Canadian community, studying for her undergraduate degree as a distance student (BA , University of Waterloo), that Linda decided to commit herself to the study of distance education itself. In 1995, Linda earned a Masters of Science in Extension Education from the University of Guelph, specializing in Adult Education and Online Learning, and began her PhD studies at OISE. (She also has a Diploma in Broadcasting and, if pressed, may confess to a brief career writing television commercials.)

From 1994 to 1999, Linda worked for the Office of Open Learning at the University of Guelph, guiding faculty in the development of effective and innovative online courses and programs. When Linda began with Guelph in 1994, she was their first distance-learning specialist. In that first eLearning semester, the Office of Open Learning offered four online courses. When Linda left five years later, the University had emerged as a leader in online learning, with over 80 online courses, and it continues to grow. While at Guelph, Linda also offered workshops on effective design practices, wrote a handbook for distance course designers, taught the online version of Communication Process, and in 1994, conducted instructional design workshops in Cameroon, West Africa for a joint University of Dschang/ University of Guelph CIDA project.

In the fall of 1999, Linda founded Online Learning Designs, a consulting firm dedicated to helping its customers achieve excellence in eLearning. Since then, she has worked with clients across Canada to design, develop, write and facilitate eLearning courses and programs. From 2000-2002, Linda was also the online program project manager for COHERE – a collaboration of eight leading Canadian universities focused on the cooperative sharing and collaborative development of online programs – where she coordinated their efforts and oversaw the development of an online database of courses and learning objects.

Linda currently lives in Markham, Ontario with her husband, Graham. She teaches online courses, and continues to introduce new instructors to the joys and challenges of designing and facilitating effective online learning.

Peter Wolf
Senior Course Developer and Learner Coach

Peter Wolf
Originally from Montreal, Peter completed a Bachelors degree in Social Work at McGill University. After moving to Toronto in 1983, Peter worked in a variety of settings, primarily assisting people in developing their personal and professional skills to increase on-the-job effectiveness and overall performance. Peter’s involvement with teaching began while working for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. He taught in a college outreach program for adults who are blind, focusing on access to computer technology and professional development.

After successfully completing certification in adult education, Peter struck out on his own and worked as an educational consultant, delivering workshops on interpersonal communications, self-management, and he started working with other educators to help improve their teaching practices. During this period, he worked with clients including the Association of Administrative Assistants, Ministry of Natural Resources, Heenan Blaikie (law firm), Queen Elizabeth Hospital, George Brown College, and Human Resources Development Canada. One of the key contracts that Peter worked on during that period was with Humber College, developing their first online distance education post-diploma program. The model developed and lessons learned have been utilized to offer a broader range of course delivery choices.

Starting in 1998, Peter worked at the University of Guelph for five years. He coached faculty in the development of pedagogically effective distance education courses and programs. Peter was instrumental in the development of the University of Guelph’s first distance MBA program. In 2003, Peter joined Teaching Support Services at the University and works as the Manager of Instructional Development, supporting faculty in further developing their teaching expertise.

Peter also works closely with Desire2Learn, an educational technology company, helping to design and deliver faculty and support training, as well as providing input into the pedagogical development of the D2L platform.

Peter and his dog are happy to now be living and working in Guelph.
