Show Your Boss

Introduction

Your boss may encourage, sponsor and/or make allowances (mostly in the form of time) for you to participate in eLearn Campus’ Certificate in eLearning Management. This brief tour is created for management, so they can better understand the features and benefits of the program and appreciate the commitments required by employees in order to get the most out of the program. We want the learner’s  boss  to be part of the decision-making process. If the boss sees benefit, he or she will be more inclined to support you to take the program.

Our learners have told us that their employer can support their participation by, for instance, offsetting the program cost or creating space in their work schedule for them to complete course work.

eLearn Campus courses require a significant time commitment, roughly equivalent to a one semester post-secondary course. Many learners will want to consult with their manager before deciding whether to take a particular course or the entire Certificate.

Employers may wish to consult this tour before recommending the program to staff, or staff may wish to bring this tour to their bosses’ attention before signing up for the program.

Which of Your Employees Should Enroll?

Our courses will be of interest to employees who have responsibility for managing various aspects of eLearning programs. The entire Certificate will be of interest to someone whose main job is to manage all aspects of designing, implementing and measuring significant eLearning programs. Other employees may have responsibility for parts of an eLearning program, like instructional design. These people may also be interested in the entire Certificate or might just want to take courses that fill in the competencies that they feel they need to build upon.

A Competency-Based Approach

eLearn Campus was established to fill what we saw was a key shortcoming in existing approaches to eLearning education. There are very few offerings that are focused on applied management competencies in the field of eLearning. Most existing programs tend to be more theoretical in their approach. Our courses have a sound theoretical foundation, but are most interested in providing adult learners with applied skills that they can use in their jobs, right away.

The following table shows the management competencies developed by our courses:

A Practical Approach

Ever notice how many eLearning courses are run out of a classroom or require the learner to travel to a conference? We think the best way to learn about eLearning is to experience eLearning. Our learners are people who are likely to advocate eLearning for others, so we think it is important for them to experience it so they can view eLearning from the user’s perspective. In a way, that is another “competency” developed by the program: applied knowledge of eLearning from the user’s perspective.

Our practical approach also develops other skills that are unique to eLearning. Your employee will be part of a virtual classroom with other eLearning managers from around the world. They will develop skills to interact using eLearning technologies. No textbook or classroom seminar can replicate that practical learning experience.

Course Demos

All our courses are based on sound adult learning principles. We take learners through a process of experience-reflection-generalization and experiment. The cycle ends with an exercise to demonstrate the principles developed in the module.

We very much believe in models of active learning (learning-by-doing), and this is why we take a competency-based approach to learner assessment. Learners are not assessed by what they can score on a test, but by what they can produce (i.e. a business case for eLearning, a project plan and budget, lesson plan, evaluation plan, etc.).

How Can Bosses Get Involved?

We believe there are two main ways for an employer to get involved:
  1. Talk to your employee before taking the course: you might want to discuss what learning objectives are important to achieve and how these can be applied after the course in the workplace. Ideally, we want our courses to have high level impacts on the employee, the employee's unit and for the employer. Ultimately, we want to institute a Champion's Survey that will evaluate how the learning of eLearn Campus is applied in the workplace.
  2. Talk to us about your expectations and how we can make sure your needs are addressed: We want to make sure that you see a difference in your employee's competencies. Tell us what is important to you. Upon your employee registering, we would like to consult with sponsoring employers to make sure we address their needs at the same time as addressing the employee's needs.
